HOUSING NEED SPECIFICS
The disastrous consequences of the earthquake of 1988 are still apparent in Lori, Tavush and Shirak regions. In Gyumri and Vanadzor towns there are still districts of "domiks", large metal shipping containers that were sent to earthquake survivors as temporary shelters but are the only living place for thousands of families to this day. In Tavush region there are villages with houses built in in landslide areas, which is a hazard to the lives of families.
Because of heavy rains, the house roofs of northern regions of Armenia are severely deteriorated - asbestos slates are often broken, and rainwater leaks in.

SPECIAL INITIATIVES:
Partnership with HFH Collier County
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity Collier County, Florida, USA, HFH Lori is eradicating housing poverty in Dsegh village. The project includes completing half-built houses, purchasing houses, roof renovation and interior renovation. 12 families, among them 21 children, are served in the first year. The partnership in this village will continue for 3 years.
The municipality of the villages has committed to make 10% investment for 10 families - 4 purchased houses and 6 renovations.
"Roof for Each Family" Advocacy Project
With the assistance of Civic Advocacy Support Program and NGOC North, HFH Lori implemented a housing advocacy and awareness raising program in Lori region from June to September 2007.
In the framework of the project HFH Lori organized a round table discussion with mass media representatives on the importance of speaking out about the housing poverty situation, a cardboard box campaign "I am homeless", a letter campaign to municipalities, held discussions and negotiations with Tashir and Dsegh community heads and councils of elderlies.
As a result of the project, Dsegh and Tashir communities signed an agreement on 10% investment in Habitat housing program in their communities which will enable us to serve more families in the region.

Information on Lori region:
Lori is located Armenia's northern border. Bounded on all sides by rugged mountains and cut by sheer gorges, Lori is a dramatically beautiful region, sparsely settled except for the valleys of the Pambak, Debed and Dzoraget rivers.
Lori is home to Haghpat and Kober monasteries -- two of Armenia's loveliest -- and a host of other important medieval monuments, to the spectacularly sited Lori Castle (Lori Berd), to a pleasing Arboretum in Gyulagarak, and to a range of stunning landscapes. Though lacking a major resort destination, Lori's importance as a transport corridor to Georgia has contributed to the development of a growing number of small hotels and restaurants on the main routes (text and photo from Rediscovering Armenia Guidebook ).
Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries, located in Lori, are listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
